Following sold out shows at the Eternity Playhouse with his original contemporary musical, FINDR, Sydney-based composer Adrian Kingwell builds on this success and explores new inspiration and sounds in FRIENDS, which he describes as “music written for my musician friends, about my non-musician friends.” These musician friends, who all perform on the EP, include Luke Byrne (Muriel’s Wedding), Martyn Hentschel (AOBO), Stefania Kurniawan (SSO), Pete Leung (The Music Box Project), Samantha Mailer (Sydney Contemporary Orchestra), and Adranne Teh (Willoughby Symphony).

As a composer, Kingwell skilfully combines compositional techniques to create pieces that are both academically challenging, yet aurally accessible. FRIENDS consists of four new contemporary classical pieces, each with strong melodic quality and a subtle sense of humour that harks back to Kingwell’s earlier musical theatre works. Taking inspiration from rock-climbing, Disney sing-alongs, kids’ TV-shows, and intimate family conversations, FRIENDS explores and celebrates how the family we choose not only shapes an individual’s social decisions, but also their artistic ones.
